Enhance your home's curb appeal this summer

Summer is the time to maintain the foundation that was laid in the spring. Don't let the fierce heat of summer ruin all the hard work you did in the spring. You can get away with watering your plants once a week in the spring. In the summer, you'll need to water your plants about two to three times a week to keep them healthy.

It is very important to water your lawn regularly during the summer. Lawns in Michigan require about a half inch to an inch and a half of water per week during summer's dry weather. Cut your lawn about once every 5 to 10 days, depending on the rate at which it grows. Keep grass blades about three inches tall to encourage deep roots, which require less water.

While you're outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather and the kids are on summer break, it's easy to accidentally let your home look like a yard sale over time. If you have kids, get them into the habit of putting their bikes and other toys away when they're done playing with them. Nothing should be left out overnight.

When considering outdoor clutter, don't overlook your selection of lawn ornaments. Keep it simple! A couple of ornaments or a bird bath can add tasteful charm to your home, but a yard covered in garden gnomes and animal statues may look more like a scene from your favorite childhood movie than a warm, welcoming home.

If your home's exterior needs paint touchups or to be repainted completely, the decline in windy and rainy days makes summer is an ideal time to do that. It's important to keep all paint on the outside of your home a neutral color. Anything too bright will make your home stand out in an unflattering way.
