OKEMOS, Mich.-Land-lease manufactured home communities provide homeowners with affordable housing in a great neighborhood environment. Residents own their homes, but lease their home sites, freeing their budgets from the additional expense of land ownership.
Community living has additional advantages for homeowners. Residents enjoy amenities such as swimming pools, community clubhouses, playgrounds, ball fields, walking/biking trails and RV storage-amenities you won't find in most site-built subdivisions or even condominium developments. Communities may offer planned community-wide events such as potluck dinners, garage sales, craft shows and holiday parties to bring neighbors together.
Lora Baumann, community manager at Augusta Woods near Belleville, personally knows the benefits of community living, having lived in both a site-built subdivision and a manufactured home community. "There is a true sense of community living," says Baumann. "You look out for each other, more so than subdivisions."
As community manager, Baumann organizes events for the residents throughout the year. "We've had an Easter egg hunt, barbeque in the summer, haunted house for Halloween, and Santa came for Christmas," says Baumann. "Fire and Safety day had a big turnout. The police and fire departments came out and talked about safety tips and did demonstrations."
Most communities have on-site community managers like Baumann and Fran Wooten, community manager at Ridgewood in Milford. Both Wooten and Baumann help to enforce rules designed to protect a homeowner's investment, act as liaisons between the owners and residents, and maintain safe community environments. Wooten says that having a manager who lives in the community gives an added feeling of security for the residents. "For the most part, residents feel better having a manager on site," says Wooten.
Manufactured home community living is a great lifestyle choice. Residents live in a community of neighbors who look out for each other, enjoy each other's company at planned events, and give new meaning to the word "neighborhood."
