Boost the “outer” beauty of your home

Planting flowers to improve exterio appeal of home

Here are a few simple tips to create a welcoming, beautiful home on the outside.

Landscaping and yard maintenance
Landscaping is one of the most obvious ways to make the exterior of your manufactured or modular home turn heads. Good landscaping starts with maintaining your lawn. Fertilize your grass approximately every 60 days, and water as needed. Lawns in Michigan require about a half inch to an inch and a half of water per week during dry weather. If adding trees to your landscaping, consider how big the tree will grow over time. You don’t want to select a tree that will eventually outgrow your home.

Clean siding and windows
Clean your home’s exterior once a year using a power washer. A power washer uses your garden hose to spray a high-pressure stream of water to homes surface. Start by spraying the top area and working your way down so the areas you already cleaned don’t get soiled again. Check your windows monthly for smudges and dirt, and clean as necessary. Be sure to wash both the inside and outside of your windows. To clean the inside, saturate the window with the cleaning solution of your choice and wipe clean with a paper towel or newspaper. For the outside, begin by spraying windows down with a garden hose and wipe down until dry.

Flowers are a quick, easy way to add bursts of color to the exterior of your home. Hang baskets of fresh flowers from your porch. A few vibrant flowers can instantly transform a dull yard. Most flowers thrive in an area where sunlight is present for at least half of the day, but pay attention to the specific needs of the flowers you choose. If planting in flower beds, edging is a great way to provide a clean finish to your beds, and adding mulch not only looks great, but also helps to reduce weeds. Popular mulch options include wood chips, pine bark and pine needles and various rocks.

Fresh paint
If you have a new home, the exterior should be crisp, clean and unnecessary to tamper with. But, homeowners who have had their home for more than 10 years may need touchups or even a new color. Test the paint on a small portion of your home before you begin. You may want to have your home painted professionally for the best result.

A well-decorated porch can serve as a sanctuary for comfort on a nice day or a social setting for your visitors. Show your personality by incorporating accents like porch swings, potted flowers, welcome mats—the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating your ideal porch. Consider updating lighting or address numbers in your own personal style.

Now, sit back and enjoy your freshened up home. You’ve earned it!
