How to make that new house feel like a home

The emptiness of a new home can be overwhelming. With so much space to fill and so many decorating decisions to make, you might feel like your house will never be truly yours. Here are a few tips for making it feel like home in no time.

If you bought a new manufactured home, you have already made some personal design decisions, like flooring, paint colors and window treatments … so you’re way ahead of the game. But, it’s still empty. What’s the first thing you should do?

First, resist the urge to go crazy in a furniture store three days after closing on your new home. “The biggest mistake new homeowners make is to run out and buy a lot of third-rate furnishings just to fill a space,” says Beverly Solomon, the creative director at Beverly Solomon Design. “Have the courage and confidence to give yourself some time to get the feel of your new home before buying anything,” Solomon suggests.

However, there are a few must-haves every new homeowner should add to their shopping list (or pull out of the moving boxes) to make the space feel cozy in no time. Let’s take a look.

  1. Literature as decor is, perhaps, the oldest trick in the book. “Nothing says ‘cozy’ and ‘home’ like favorite books and meaningful accessories,” says Carole Marcotte, owner of Form & Function in Raleigh, NC. You don’t have to spend big bucks on bronze elephants and weird metal spheres to break up your blocks of literature. Marcotte recommends displaying sentimental items such as signed baseballs or your grandmother’s fine china.
  2. Add some signs of life. Live plants are great to fill empty corners. Try large picking up large plants such as ficus, palms, or the popular fiddle-leaf figs to fill the space. Not a gardener? Stop at the florist for colorful flowers to brighten the space instantly.
  3. Big baskets are a great start for organization. There’s no need to set up a full-scale system yet—pick up several large baskets and use by a front door for shoes, or to store some of life’s clutter that builds up quickly, even in a new home.
  4. Focus new purchases on the bedroom. It’s where you’ll be spending almost a third of your time when you’re at home, after all. Jonathon Scott, star of HGTV’s Property Brothers, explains that often people skip decorating their bedroom. “You have to have somewhere to sleep in and relax.” Scott say this is where to focus spending in a new home. Invest in a quality mattress and bedding, upgrade the lighting, and add meaningful accent pieces.
Above all, be patient! Enjoy getting to know your new house, and in just a few months, you’ll start to understand how best to make it feel like home.
